When exactly 100 KB is required

100 KB is the point where compression stops being noticeable. It is the budget for social and messenger profile pictures, attachments in business correspondence, employee cards in corporate systems, and images inside presentations and Word documents that have to travel by email.

Unlike 10 or 20 KB, there is no longer a trade-off between “it fits” and “it looks decent” — at 100 KB a mid-size photograph keeps both its detail and its clean edges. That is why this threshold is the usual recommendation when no hard requirement exists and the file simply needs to be light.

What that means in pixels

A useful reference point: 100 KB comfortably covers a photograph of up to roughly 1500 pixels on the long edge. An image that size looks clean on any laptop or phone screen, because each pixel still gets enough data.

Keep the original 4000 pixels and simply squeeze to 100 KB, and the picture goes soft: the same 100 KB now has to be spread across seven times the area. So for a 100 KB budget it is almost always better to downscale to 1200–1500 pixels first and compress afterwards — the visual result is better at the identical file weight.

Is 100 KB enough for print

For screens, comfortably. For print, no. Printing needs around 300 dots per inch, so a 10×15 cm photo wants roughly 1200×1800 pixels at high quality — a file of 500–800 KB. If the shot is going to a print shop or onto photo paper, 100 KB will show up on the print as softness and banding across smooth gradients. Use 500 KB or lossless compression for that.

Every row is without downscaling. Bring the long edge to 1500 pixels before compressing and the same 100 KB will look cleaner still.

Frequently asked questions

A shot from a modern smartphone weighs 3–6 MB, so compressing to 100 KB makes the file 30–60× smaller (roughly 97–98%). That quality is enough for a document photo or an avatar.
On screen, essentially not — unless the shot is stretched across a full monitor width. The difference shows when zooming in and on smooth gradients such as sky, where faint banding can appear. In a feed, a chat or a slide deck the result is near-impossible to tell from the original.
Fine for screens, not for print. A 10×15 cm print needs about 1200×1800 pixels at high quality — that is 500–800 KB. At 100 KB, softness and banding across gradients become visible on paper.
Downscale. At an identical file weight, a 1500-pixel image at good quality looks noticeably better than a 4000-pixel one pushed to very low quality — there is simply more data per pixel.
It is left untouched. Screenshots and images saved from the web are often under 100 KB already — recompressing them would cost quality for no meaningful gain.
